BRAZIL - Look at Matinhos

Back to Brazil Index Page

This is the restaurant where we didn't have our final meal in Matinhos. The plan was to go there for lunch on our last day but we didn't! But we can't remember why??? One of life's little mysteries. Main street in Matinhos - i.e., the shopping district! The home furnishings store with at least two outlets in town. Karen's brother Alex has this small internet shop (under the blue awning). It's one of about four in town so competition is tough and he isn't located on a main traffic street. Just on the outskirts of town. The Multi Loja store is the 'other' outlet. This was our favourite 'fast food' outlet. The pastel is a deep fried pastry that is or can be stuffed with a variety of things from cheeses to meats to chocolate to bananas and, even sea food. What a great way to clean out the fridge. Cao is dog in Portuguese. so this is a doggy grooming parlour, boarding kennel, etc. We sent the three dogs, Lady, Sorte and Draco here for bathes - total cost about C$35.00, money well spent!! I sure wouldn't do it for that price. The local vegetable market. Bananas are a big seller here, amongst other things - some recognizable others not. Colourful displays - I suspect that the tall bottles on the left are home made items (no labels). Home made or home brew - what's the difference. These are two types of home brew available at the market. And the friendly cashier. Note the wines and booze on the top shelves how civilized is that. Too bad the wines aren't drinkable though, one area Brazil is definitely going to have to work on. This is the (I can't remember the name) it's something like aviariarria or pet supply store. They sell or trade for things like chicks, chickens, roosters, puppies, kittens, rabbits, ducks, fish, ... ... feed for chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, etc. As well as sorvete (ice cream), beach toys, ... ... eggs, candies, lighters, aspirins, batteries and toothpaste, to name a few. Very diversified selection and friendly staff. This was our local supermercado. Pretty good selection of foods and beer. The sale items all priced in reais. Remember, if the 'r' is the first letter in the word it's pronounced like an 'h'. (1 reais = C$0.50 approx.) And our pharmacy! It's interesting the kind of drugs that the pharmacists are allowed to sell in Brazil, at the airport pharmacy in Sao Paulo I was able to purchase two different antibiotics over the counter. Prices were outrageous but they seemed to work. Last looks from the beach - looking down the beach away from the town ... ... and in the opposite direction with a shot of Matinhos. How fast do things grow in this part of the world? This photo was taken on Oct. 4th ... .. this was taken on Oct. 25th. With the salt air cars rust quickly too, notice how the car has become a pile of ... We like to think that they're saying, 'Have a safe trip home and hurry back, we'll miss you!' But who knows.
