Brazil - "Getting there"

Back to Brazil Index Page

This is the start of our trip to Brazil - (well, not quite). Although after the 18th hour it was beginning to feel like it must be. The photos start after we landed in Sao Paulo, Enjoy! Taken while waiting for the bus to transport us across the city from GRU to the other airport Congonhas, for our connecting flight to Curitiba (pron: Curee-cheeba). We forgot our beloved Lambie-Pie (sob-sob) so we picked up Sgt. Polar Bear for the trip. No, we didn't get him in Sao Paulo, he came from Toronto and no, he doesn't have a passport. Heck, with that outfit, even George Bush wouldn't question him! Two tired travellers getting ready for a 45 minute bus ride across town. Oh-oh, you've seen those documentaries too eh! I wonder what the homeless in Vancouver would think of this? Maybe the APG should set up a branch office down here. Things did improve after that first little bit. It wasn't too long after this we remembered that we aren't keen on big cities. But even in a city of, I think it's something like 18 million, there can be some spots which look attractive. Look closely at the right hand end of the bridge - see the blue-ish purple-y trees. They are absolutely gorgeous. We were in Curitiba the other day and there was a huge one that you had to look hard at to find the green leaves there was so much blue on it. Oh-oh, it's starting to look just like a big city again. It must be time to ... Elaine asked the check-in clerk if we could take her picture with the Sgt. and the gal thought E was giving her Sarge. You should have seen the fight that ensued. Well not really, although she was a bit tearful. She said we couldn't take her picture (against the rules) but she would take ours. This is the other Sao Paulo airport that we're leaving from (the one that had the crash about a month or so ago) to fly to Curitiba. Yep, SP's a big city that just seems to have sprawled out of proportion to what should be possible. Calgary - take a notes! It went on like this for miles, oops, kilometres! So now we're coming into Curitiba. A pleasant little city that was properly planned before construction started. Note the lake in the picture, it looks like an old quarry that's been turned into a park. Here's another view of it. Wow, what a gorgeous little town (he's thinking). What the H---! Where's the pleasant little city that Rick Steeves was talking about? This looks just like another large sprawling city! Well, I guess that kind of sums it up for now!
