Al Ain

One of the coffee cup 'themed' roundabouts in Al Ain. Never let it be said that you can't get cultured in the desert. This concert took place at the old fort shown in the next picture. The old fort is now a museum with a variety of displays showing the 'old ways of life'. View looking down Main Street and towards the Coliseum roundabout with the 'Flyover' in the background. One of the pedestrian overpasses, the safest way to get across the street! Here's a closer look at the Coliseum roundabout. Kind of looks like fog in Al Ain. Although it did happen occassionaly - this isn't a natural fog. Here's the man behind the fog ... ... with his fog machine all fired up and ready to go. Why, you ask? This is the 'bug control' system for mosquitoes and other such things. Apparently it is just some kind of oil mixture and not toxic chemicals as was first envisioned. It certainly seemd to be effective while we were over there. The speed which the fog spreads out is quite amazing. The next picture was taken immediately after this one. You can just make out the corner of the roof of the building at top left center. Another of the many roundabouts, this one with a fountain. How about a treasure chest theme, commemorating the pearl diving days. Never was too sure if this one was meant to be Sheikh Zayed or not but that was the name given to it by the ex-pats. A better shot of it. Believe it or not but this is also a roundabout. A waterfall in the desert, man made of course. Another view of it, don't consider the expense or practicality of it, just enjoy. There are Pizza Huts all over the world. This one was quite popular here as well. Never really figured out what this one was but it got the nickname of the 'Wedding Cake Roundabout'. Believe it or not these are the entrance and exits to our liquor store. It was after hours when this picture was taken. The Carrefour Shopping Mall. Not sure if this was a coffee cup or an incense burner. One of the university buildings. The Terrarium Roundabout. And another Fountain R/A, this one is under the flyover. An unusual picture - the flyover without traffic! This was early on a Friday morning.
